TESTIMONIALS

House of Hope helped me get on my feet when my life was so far in the dumps that I honestly thought I was living a great life. They provided the encouragement I needed to go out and find a job when I didn’t want to. The house also helped me finally start working and getting my GED which I most likely never would have done without this facility. All the staff and counselors here have been really nice and welcoming to me. I cannot say enough good things about them. Now that my time here is almost done, I feel I will be better able to provide for my child on the way, and have more knowledge and tools on how to deal with life and how to keep clean. HOH has been the best thing to happen to me in a very long time. I thank God for the chance to spend my treatment here.

When I came to the House of Hope I had little or no self confidence.  My life of drugs and alcohol had beaten me down repeatedly.  I was hopeless, helpless and suicidal.  It had cost me everything I held dear, and all those who tried to love me.  I had hit rock bottom and had nowhere to go but up.  While trying to piece myself back together again as a person a strange sequence of events happened.  In the past I would have considered this to be coincidence.  But then one night at an AA meeting someone read the poem “Footprints” and I had a spiritual awakening.

I quit believing in coincidence that night and realized that God brought me to HOH.  I now have serenity and an inner peace that I was lacking during my days of using.

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank HOH for being the den in which God chose to save me.

Please pass along my sincere thanks to the counselors and staff who were here when I went through the most profound change I’ve ever experienced in sobriety.  I suddenly find myself grateful for my blessings instead of  grumbling about what “could of/should have” been had the world been fair to me.  It’s as if a ton of weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.  I’ve got a job I love.  I’m renting a room from a sober AA friend.  And I get to go to the best AA meetings right here in Mankato.  Who could ask for more?  I’m sober and happy today and HOH has much to do with that.  God bless you all and keep doing what you’re doin’!

“When I entered the House of Hope I was scared and nervous but the other clients really helped me out.  You have to be on red for 72 hours. It was difficult but it was for my own benefit.  I then moved to blue for 2 weeks.  Then I turned green and everything was great at the House of Hope.  You are able to work and do things.  For myself I had to do anger management which was very helpful to my recovery.  Overall the House of Hope is a great place.  The staff are helpful and supportive.  They are always willing to listen.”  Jon S.-2010

“My father died at age 60 from alcoholism. If it weren’t for my recovery and the House of Hope, I would not be here now.”

“I will always remember the first young man who…came to Big Gain looking for employment. He stated…”I have been in [trouble} with the law, have been incarcerated, have turned my life around, and am looking for a second chance…’ Big Gain hired this man and we were not at all disappointed…”
Mark Depuydt, Big Gain Personnel Manager, Mankato, MN

"Going to the halfway house gave me the strength not to go back to my old ways. I believe that people at HOH have a great concern about helping those..who deserve a second chance at life…I honestly felt and still feel that there are people who care about me and that I’m a worthwhile person…Today I feel a part of instead of apart from.”
John, 1999.

"The House of Hope gave me an opportunity to reinforce my sobriety while I worked on creating a foundation for my recovery." John C. 2006

"In the summer of 2005 I spent 3 months at the House of Hope.  I had just "graduated" from a 28-day inpatient treatment program.  I have to admit I was not enthused to be going to a halfway house.  The first week was filled with a lot of free time.  This was time that I could appreciate, because I was starting to be trusted.  I started to build some friendships within the house.  I also started to attend AA meetings, which I enjoyed, and began what has become some long term and meaningful relationships.  The HOH helped me understand what recovery after treatment really is.  It was probably the most important part to my recovery. The counselors,:"Doug", and the HOH alumni showed me a different way to live.  When I look back to where I was when I first came in (scared, embarrassed, resentful, low self esteem, etc.) to how things are now, it is almost like living in a nightmare that turns into a calming dream.  In my life I have had many wonderful things happen, but probably not anything as life changing as my time spent at the House of Hope."  Mark J.

WHAT THE GED PROGRAM MEANS TO ME AT THE HOUSE OF HOPE

Jeremiah B.(2010) writes:

What the G.E.D. program at the House of Hope has done for me is give me a chance to do something I would not have done any other place. It has given me the hope that I can finally amount to something. The program is a great chance for people like me to get help in schooling. It makes it possible to get a G.E.D., while getting help for my addiction. The program is not time consuming or hard. It is only two days a week, for an hour or so, at a time.I was a high school drop-out, who never thought of going back. I was never interested in getting my G.E.D., until I found out that people don't want to hire a guy with no education. In the past, I have tried to get my G.E.D., but it never worked out for me. I either got a job or went to jail. So after a few times of trying, I gave up. I didn't think it would ever happen. Then I had a wake-up call in my life. My kids were taken from me for my drug use. I was sent to House of Hope to get help. I learned that there was a G.E.D. program here. I had my doubts about it at first. Then I met with Bryce, and got started on signing up. I spent a few weeks getting ready to take the tests with Bryce's help. He is a great teacher and a great person. He is willing to help in any way he can, not just with the G.E.D. program, but with life problems too. He has made it possible for us to even do this. Without his help, I don't think I would have been able to do this. He stands up for us to have this chance. If more people would be willing to do this for us, I thnk we would have a better chance at success in life. In closing, the G.E.D. program and the House of Hope have given me a chance to do better in my life. I have gotten the help for my additcion and a chance to get a good job, or more education. It might not seem like a good place for a new start, but it has done wonders for me, and for many others like me.

Well, let me begin by saying; before starting the GED Program, I never would have taken the classes because in my mind I didn’t think it was even possible for me to achieve such a goal.  I started working on the practice tests while at the House of Hope.  After that I knew I could do it by working to the best of my abilities.  I’ve taken three tests so far.  Passing them made me a better person today because I didn’t give up on my life-long dream.  Having the support of the HOH Staff here really made me stay positive and work hard.  I now can hold on to my goals that I have always wanted to achieve.  Thelma O.

The GED courses here at House of Hope are very helpful with people’s recovery.  Also they help to give clients a little nudge, to actually complete something in life.  It is very important to finish your schooling; it will also help to get a better career in life as well.  People can actually say that they’re not a dropout anymore.  I personally like the extra help with my GED study.  If I didn’t have the extra help, I would probably never finish my schooling.  I thought I would never be able to complete my GED, but now it looks like I will.  Amanda B.

Royce M.(2008) writes:  To Whom It May Concern:

I would like to thank you for this program.  It was a chance to work towards my GED when I did not expect it.  When I got here, I didn’t know there would be this opportunity to get my GED.  I think this will help me to get work, and it builds my confidence in my sobriety.  It also makes me proud to think I finally will get this done after all these years.  It further supports my getting sober, and what is ahead for me in the future looks promising. So, once again, thank you for this opportunity.    Yours truly,  Royce M.
